There was once this Couple who were happily married and had a Beautiful Son.
The Husband was a pilot with a commercial airline. The Wife was also working and doing her part in maintaining the household. Their Son was 6 years old then and treated his Daddy as the ultimate idol in his life. He was always talking about his Dad in front of his friends at the child-care centre. He was so so proud of his Dad.
One day, there was this Halloween party organised by one of the kids at child-care. Being the loving parents that Singaporeans are today, all the kids in their class went to the party accompanied by their parents. The Son however, was only accompanied by his Mum as his Dad was away at work. As the kids played together, the parents were also gathering around in pairs or groups chatting.
The Mum was sitting with this other mum and started to chat too. After a while, she said abruptly:
"My husband and I are getting a divorce. (Silence)
Trust me when I say that women's intuition is dead accurate, because it definitely is. It's been awhile since I've suspected that he was having an affair. So one day, when he told me that he's flying to Europe, I called up his company and asked them for the name of the hotel he's staying claiming that I need to look for him urgently. It wasn't a shock for me when his company told me not only he wasn't working that day, he had even taken a week's leave to go on a holiday trip. It pains me so much just thinking about him lying to me.
When he came back, I confronted him about it. He admitted to having an affair with an air stewardess in the same airline company. What really hurts me was when he said, 'Now that you've found out, just get over it and we'll continue with life.' But I can't. How can I ever accept the fact that he's having an affair? There's no way out of this, I want a divorce.
He agreed to it, but he wanted custody of our son. I told him that the court will never grant him custody for our son because he wouldn't have the time to take care of him. In the end, not only did I get the custody of our son, he also have to pay for all living expenses of our son until he reaches adulthood. There's once when he refused to pay and I threatened to complain to AWWA. He asked me, 'Do you have to be so cruel? Do you need to go to such an extent?' I told him, 'Yes!' How could he refuse to pay for his own son when he's spending on another woman?
He told me not to tell our son the truth about what happened. But I couldn't, it is only right to let my son know the truth. So one day, I told my son, 'Daddy and I can't be together anymore because he wants to be with another woman.' My son replied, 'Mummy, I don't like Daddy anymore.' I'm touched.
But still, I wouldn't deny them the chance to meet each other, they're father-and-son afterall. Everytime my son gets to see his Dad, he still gets so excited. His Daddy will forever be his idol. This is good, he doesn't have to be affected by the divorce. But I couldn't stand the sight of his Dad anymore, it's a mixture of feelings - hurt and disgust. So I told his Dad to give me a call beforehand whenever he wants to visit our son so that I can plan my time to avoid bumping into him.
My heart aches so much whenever I think of what he had done. This is already the best I can do."
I cried when I heard this. She didn't even shed a tear when she told her story. She's such a strong woman. YOU GO GIRL!
